Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust selects Theriak for ePrescribing and Medicines Management

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) has entered into a partnership with CIS Healthcare
to adapt the Theriak ePrescribing system for use in the UK. Theriak is a bespoke ePrescribing
and medicines management solution, which supports complete closed loop from prescribing to
administration and bedside verification. LTHT has previously supported the development and
full implementation of ChemoCare©, the CIS Healthcare ePrescribing system specific for
oncology.

With an annual budget of nearly £800 million, Leeds Teaching Hospitals is one of the largest
NHS trusts in the UK, and includes two major sites, Leeds General Infirmary and St James’s
University Hospital. Theriak will initially be implemented in two clinical areas in order to finalise the system configuration and clinical process changes. Later it is anticipated that the system will be implemented in other areas of the Trust.

Theriak was benchmarked by NHS Connecting for Health as part of their recent review of ePrescribing solutions and CIS has spent the past year working on the improvements suggested
by the national feedback. Leeds Teaching Hospitals and CIS Healthcare have entered into a
partnership to complete the localisation changes and to establish a reference site for Theriak in
the UK.

Brian Steven, Director for Business Development and Performance Management at LTHT,
commented:

“The Trust’s ambition is to be at the forefront of developments in technology and this is an
extremely important partnership opportunity which will be of significant benefit to both parties.
The system has the potential to deliver real advances in both patient safety and cost reduction
thanks to shorter patient stays and more efficient use of costly drugs.”

Theriak will incorporate the Multilex Drug Data File from First DataBank Europe through its
Drug Advice eXpert (DAX), which provides a unique graphical interface for clinical decision
support, enabling users to quickly and easily check for drug allergies, drug-drug interactions and
duplicate medicines.

Theriak will also be interfaced with existing Trust systems to offer a seamless solution for
medicines management; this includes ChemoCare from CIS, which means the Trust will have an
integrated solution for both general and complex chemotherapy prescribing.

Professor Liz Kay, LTHT Clinical Director of Medicines Management & Pharmacy Services, said:

“Here in Leeds we have a track record of innovation and change and we recognise the
weaknesses of the current paper-based prescribing system with its risks of human error.
Implementing a technology-based solution is a challenge but we believe the Theriak system
offers functionality not previously available before. We are looking forward to seeing it in
action and, with staff on our wards, helping to improve patient care.”

Dr Steve Dean, Deputy Medical Director, Medicines Management and Pharmacy Services,
agrees:

"This is a fantastic opportunity to make medicines safer and to improve the care we provide for patients in Leeds. We are looking forward to working with Theriak to bring these benefits to our patients.”

Theriak is currently implemented in approximately fifty hospitals across Europe, in The
Netherlands, Iceland, Norway, Denmark and Austria. CIS Healthcare is also the supplier of
ChemoCare, the leading ePrescribing solution for chemotherapy in the UK.

Tony Pegg, Chief Executive of CIS Healthcare said:

“We are delighted to be working with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The opportunity to
work together is yet another major milestone in the introduction of Theriak into the UK. We will
be combining our highly successful track record of chemotherapy prescribing implementations in
the UK with an advanced ePrescribing product of equal track record across Europe. The UK is a
further cornerstone to our continued growth as a specialist ePrescribing systems provider.”
